Maroon Machine steamrolls over Sentraal in epic clash

Vryheid Rugby Club would like to thank their sponsors for the amazing new first team jerseys, which were widely complimented by the supporters in attendance

The Maroon Machine was running on all cylinders over last weekend. They took on the formidable Sentraal team, who were on a hot streak after defeating Piet Retief in the previous game. They were brimming with confidence and wanted to continue their winning ways.
However, Vryheid had a simple game plan, namely to remove their massive forward pack from the equation and play it wide. But first and foremost, the priority was beating them to the breakdowns. This tactical brilliance was thanks to Vryheid head coach Lwazi Mduli. He realised from the previous game that Sentraal had no answers for the Vryheid line speed and electric backline. When the game started, Sentraal dominated the scrums as expected, but Vryheid’s superior kicking, line speed in defence and attack basically isolated the Sentraal forward pack. The line-outs were particularly successful for Vryheid, with Zondi poaching a lot of the opposition’s balls and not losing any of his own throw-ins. There was calmness and readiness among the players, which saw them posting a rather dominating score of 50-17 by the final whistle.
‘Man of the Match’ awards went to Khula ‘Zilla’ Radbe for the forwards, Carl Holthausen for the backline, and the overall ‘Man of the Match’ was Jaco Truter.

The Maroon Machine now travels to Piet Retief for a must-win clash in the hopes of progressing to the play-off stages. In general, this has been a difficult season for the club, with numerous injuries and many other challenges. However, the committee believes that in the coming seasons, Vryheid will be the top team in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
