Gugu Nkosi from Vryheid Athletic Club competed in the gruelling Kosmos 3-in-1 Marathon in Secunda over the weekend.
The Kosmos 3-in-1 Marathon is dubbed as one of the fiercest on the ultra-marathon circuit. This race is unique since it is a 73.3km race, taking place at Lake Umuzi in Secunda. The total distance is broken into three races, as follows: 42.2km, starting at 06:00; then the runners line up again for the 21.1m, starting at 13:00; and line up once more at 17:00 for the 10km race. You can also build your own distance during the course of the day.
Gugu completed the 73.3km in a time of 08:42.21. Her different times for each leg are as follows:
42.2km – 04:43.30;
21.1km – 02:35.47; and
10km – 01:23.03.
To fit one full marathon lap into Secunda, the runners have to just about go down every residential street, which means there is constant twisting and turning. This makes for a challenging run, since it may feel as if a runner never runs more than 500m in one direction before making a turn. The race was organised by the Secunda Marathon Club.
