Racing pigeons survive hawk attack

The first Ladysmith pigeon in the Marble Hall race was clocked by Lewis Hay

Last Saturday (July 15), there was some excitement for pigeon fanciers when Border Union liberated their pigeons in Ladysmith on the Hauser Park fields.

There was a heart-stopping moment when a hawk dived into the bunch of pigeons, but fortunately missed his target.

The KZN open pigeons raced from Marble Hall (396km) and Boshoff (443km), with both races released at 07:30.

The first Marble Hall pigeon was clocked by Mark Maharaj from Weenen at 13:36, four minutes ahead of his brother, Emmanuel. The first Ladysmith pigeon was clocked by Lewis Hay at 13:19. The winning pigeon flew an average speed of 71km/h.

From Boshoff, the first pigeon was clocked by Jimmy Hanlon at 12:20, two minutes ahead of Eric Holder Jnr from Bergville. Both these pigeons were in the top 10 in KZN. The winning pigeon flew an average speed of 91km/h.

Marble Hall Open (27 pigeons):
Mark Maharaj (Weenen) 1,9; Emmanuel Maharaj (Weenen) 2,6; Lewis Hay 3,4,5,7,8.

Boshoff Open (108 pigeons):
Jimmy Hanlon 1,6,14,18,19; Eric Holder Jnr (Bergville) 2,7,8,17,20,23,26,27,28,29,30; Lewis Hay 3,4,5,9,10,11,12,15,16; Emmanuel Maharaj (Weenen) 13,21; William Faurie 22,25; Mark Maharaj (Weenen) 24.

This weekend, the yearling races are from Standerton (185km) and Winburg (270km).
