Parkrun celebrates 18 years of go… go… go

This Saturday is the last Saturday for parkrun to start at 08:00

This coming October marks 18 years since parkrun’s founder, Paul Sinton-Hewitt, shouted “Go!” at the very first parkrun event. Members of parkrun would like to make this 18th anniversary one to remember by dedicating the whole month of October to something extra-special…

Parkwalk at parkrun!

Paul’s vision was that parkrun would be open to everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from. Whether people volunteer, walk, jog or run, they are welcomed with open arms. That vision is very much alive and kicking, running… and walking!

Nearly 900,000 different people have walked at parkrun, with more than 13,000 people walking every single week.

There is no time limit at parkrun, and thousands of people take over an hour to complete the event.

The results at Vryheid parkrun (according to percentage of achievement) are as follows: 1. Anna (75-79) – 44.39; 2. Gerhard (60-64) – 29.19; 3. Leon (30-34) – 23.23; 4. Waldo (30-34) – 25.21; 5. Thulani (50-54) – 30.11; 6. Elias (40-44) – 28.52; 7. Pieter (30-34) – 26.41; 8. Ronel (60-64) – 40.12; 9. Jacobus (60-64) – 34.36; 10. Angela (60-64) – 42.23.

Training programme:

Week one: 15 minutes of walking every other day at an easy pace. Take as many rest breaks as you need.

Week two: 15 minutes of walking every other day. Try to add in a five-minute or 500m (two long blocks in Vryheid streets). In the five minutes, consider doing one minute of faster pace and one minute of easy walking once a week.
Week three to five will be made available next week.

This Saturday is the last Saturday for parkrun to start at 08:00. From October 1, it starts at 07:00. Saturday is a public holiday, so hope to see a lot of new faces to start a walking programme. Everybody is welcome to join a group of walkers at the Biltong Shop at Stegens filling station. Phone Smuts on 082 442 4986 for more details. Bring your braai to parkrun on Saturday!
