New angling club set to have tight lines

A fund-raising fishing competition is set for August 28

The recently established Umtshezi Angling Club founded by Ish Jaggernath, Rushil Gobinparsadh, Avanash Lakhan and Dharam Sewraj held its first club meeting on July 27 where the club executives were voted in and the club constitution was adopted.

Executive members elected and they are – Chair: Avanash Lakhan, Deputy Chair: Billy Lukhan, Secretary: Rushil Gobinparsadh and Treasurer Ajay Sewbran.

“The club’s purpose is to promote angling and good fellowship throughout the community of Estcourt while attracting youngsters to the sport and ensuring that they are kept off the streets and away from drugs and mischief,” said newly elected club Chair Avanash Lakhan.

“We have lots of future events as well as workshops planed for members as well as non-members of the Umtshezi Angling Club. With already some big names in baits and equipment on board to assist,”  said honorary member Ish Jaggernath.

As an inaugural first event for the club, it was decided that it is only fitting that the club host an event that gives back to the community and has teamed up with Estcourt CanSA Association, and will host the Umtshezi Angling Club inaugural fishing competition on August 28  at Wagendrift Dam from 06:00 to 15:00.

“We would like to thank the chair of the Estcourt  CanSA Relay and Estcourt Cansa Association Anil Sookraj for coming on board with us to host this competition,” said Mr Lakhan.

All entry proceeds will be donated to CanSA on the day of the Relay at the Forderville Primary grounds September 2.

“The Umtshezi Angling Club is being registered as a non-profit organisation and will ensure that membership fees, donations and other fees are utilised for the sport development of its  members and environment. There are already plans for increasing the number of dust bins at Wagendrift Dam, reconstruction of the broken lapas, etc once we start receiving these funds,” said Ajay Sewbran, the club’s treasurer.

The club looks forward to welcoming many more members.
