Race to honour the late Dr Joseph Shabalala

Also in the pipeline are 8-10km races that will be held in different cities around the country

The Bhekizize Joseph Shabalala Marathon was recently launched during an event held at the Crown Hotel.

Named after the founder of the world-renowned Ladysmith Black Mambazo music group, this 41km marathon will be held in the Ladysmith area, starting in Watersmeet and finishing at the Indoor Sports Complex.

As confirmed by organisers Thulani Shabalala and Vuyo Tshabalala, the Bhekizizwe Joseph Shababala Marathon will be run on February 11 next year (2023).

Many charity events will lead up to the main race, starting this year.

According to Tshabalala, the race is being held for charity purposes, so everything they do (even before the race) will be for non-profit purposes.

Starting from September, when Ladysmith Black Mambazo returns from touring, games will be hosted at Embuzweni in Peacetown, where the organisers will also lend a helping hand to flood victims.

“Sport requires one to be disciplined, so it’s unlikely to find a child who is involved in sport engaging in drugs and other social ills. Having a marathon of this kind in Ladysmith will also boost the local economy,” he said.
