Itec Freespool wins big in closed angling competition

The next outing of the NFWAA calendar will be the Knockout semi-final, which will take place at Richgate on January 22.

Itec Freespool has won big in a closed angling competition.

The inaugural Natal Fresh Water Angling Association (NFWAA) closed competition was fished on December 5.

This took place at Sandford Islands at the Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam.

According to Shabir Ismail, the President of the NFWAA, this much-anticipated competition was cancelled twice in consecutive seasons.

This was due to logistical challenges and the Covid-19 national lockdown.

“Only registered members of clubs affiliated to NFWAA were eligible to participate,” confirmed Ismail.

He added there were lucrative prizes up for grabs in each category.

“Anglers claimed their spots in the queue as early as Saturday morning (December 4), despite the predictions of heavy rain,” he chuckled.

Mohamed Midas sponsored R3 000 in gift vouchers, over and above the cash prizes that were on offer.

“Fortunately, the weather played along on the day of the competition, and anglers enjoyed a pleasant day of fishing. Itec Freespool’s anglers managed to scoop nine of the 18 prizes on offer!”

The top three anglers in the scaled category were Sanjay Mahabeer (4,030kg), Ski Mohan (3,810kg), and Amith Pullen (3,450kg) who won R3 000, R2 000 and R1 000 respectively.

All three anglers are members of Itec Freespool.

“The non-scaled category first prize winner was Aslam Cassim Abdool of Itec Freespool. He safely landed a barbel of 8,280kg and pocketed a whopping R3 000. Second (R2 000) and third (R1 000) positions went to Pravesh Tontpal of Docrats and Nikhil Pooni of Chelmsford AC.”

On behalf of the NFWAA, Ismail thanked all sponsors for the donated prizes.

He also thanked Yahya Docrat of Midas for his support and sponsorship.

The next outing of the NFWAA calendar will be the Knockout semi-final, which will take place at Richgate on January 22.
