With South Africa’s recent move to lockdown Level 1, three residents decided to celebrate with fellow residents recently.
Adri Els, Andre Swanepoel and Sheldon Pienaar organised a friendly ‘beer pong’ competition at the Newcastle Highlanders Rugby Club on March 12. While the event was focused on fun, organisers were serious about adhering to Covid-19 regulations.
With sponsored prizes on the line, contestants vied for the top spots and the coveted title of king and queen of ‘beer pong’. Also known as Beirut, ‘beer pong’ is a drinking game where players try and land a ping pong ball in a cup of alcohol at the other end of a table. Teams can be two players or more per side.
At the conclusion of the competition, four teams stood tall:
First place – Bonita Janse van Rensburg and Vincent Venter.
Second place – Janco Pistorius and Spencer Muller.
Third place – Sheldon Pienaar and Rossouw Pistorius.
Fourth place – Adriaan ‘Olifant’ Koorts and Christian Koorts (brothers).
“Our aim was to provide a safe and relaxing atmosphere after the long and tiring hard lockdown,” explained Els. “We also wanted to have a secure and healthy space for the town’s youth to come and have fun without feeling insecure or in danger.”
After a congratulatory message for the competition winners, Els said similar events are being planned on a monthly basis, to hopefully give residents a social outlet and something fun to anticipate.
