Residents fuming mad over rates increase

This is a huge change from last year's 0% increase on property rates

Readers have reacted with shock at AbaQulusi Local Municipality’s decision to increase the tariff rates.
As reported in last week’s issue of the Vryheid Herald, the municipality proposed a tariff increase of 5% for water from July 1, while property rates will see an increase of 7%. This is a huge change from last year’s 0% increase on property rates. Residents can also expect an increase in their electricity tariffs, between 4% and 6.22%. Acting Municipal Manager Mncedisi Maphisa said that with regards to the sale of electricity, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) was responsible for price determination for the bulk cost of electricity.
“The price determination by NERSA that municipalities should use is a 6.22% increase as per guidelines,” he said.
Sanitation and refuse removal have also increased by 5% respectively.
With the country going through tough economic times and the Covid-19 pandemic resulting in many losing their jobs, residents have questioned whether the hefty increases are the right way to go.
