Chess helps locals make new ‘mates’

Chess lovers are invited to come together every Thursday morning at The Guinea Fowl.

The ancient game of chess is making all the right moves at the Guinea Fowl Coffee Shop on Beaconsfield Street.

A group of enthusiasts, some experienced players and others less experienced, have started meeting every Thursday morning for a few games.

Retired principal, Leon Lombard, who has years of experience coaching chess in the area and beyond, has brought the chess players together and over the past two Thursdays, ‘chess-wrights’ like Paul, Arrie, Coen, Pieter, Laurie, Attie and Leon have met.

The Courier’s Terry and Byron also put in an appearance but soon realised they were up against the masters! “Chess brings people together and the informal competition is tremendous to see.

All are welcome to join us from around 10am at the Guinea Fowl,” said Leon. For more details, contact Leon on 082 704 4631.
