Hobo Day holds a hidden meaning at old age cottages

Hobos are often considered the forgotten members of society, who are not given much attention and considered a nuisance, yet they are also human and deserve to be treated with respect.

This was the message from the La Gratitude Home For the Aged Cottages, as residents held a ‘Hobo Day’ on March 15.

Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the Home, Frans and Marina Smith said this day was not about mocking or belittling the shunned people of society, but highlighting their plight and everyday challenges.

“I want them to go home with a message. There’s more to life than ignoring hobos I want them to be put in a hobo’s shoes, literally,” said Smith.

Residents dressed in patched and torn clothes with boards hung around their necks describing the circumstances of hobos.

The day concluded with steaming hot fried chips (slap chips), served with a swig of black tea presented in alcohol bottles by the residents.
