Swift action by alert woman leads to the arrest of two vandals

She immediately pulled over and apprehended the two. "One was about 22 and the other one said he was 15. I arrested them and took them to the police station."

Alert policewoman, Bongiwe Ndlovu, caught two youths vandalizing the Ten Commandments Memorial this morning and promptly made an on-the-spot arrest.

Bongiwe, who is based in Newcastle but lives on Louis Steenkamp Street near the Memorial on Colley Street, said she was driving past when she noticed the two young men attempting to break off pieces of steel above the Well of Living Waters memorial.

She immediately pulled over and apprehended the two.  “One was about 22 and the other one said he was 15.  I arrested them and took them to the police station.”

While the Dundee Police wanted to know who was responsible for the park, Bongiwe contacted the Courier who immediately put her in touch with Leon du Plooy of the Seventh Day Adventist Church who originally put up the Memorial Park.    It appears as if the older youth is out on parole for housebreaking.

The Ten Commandments Park has been heavily vandilised previously.  Graffiti , including profanities, were spray painted on the various monuments following political unrest three years ago.  The Well itself contains piles of refuse including liquor bottles and household goods.  Mr du Plooy said he was very thankful for Bongiwe’s prompt and selfless actions.
