Golfing in the wind

Braving the 55 km/hr gale-force winds, 64 golfers took to the Vulintaba Golf Course to make a difference last Tuesday.

“Only fools and dogs would go out in this weather,” said one of the golfers.

They came from far and wide in support of the day with a noble objective in mind.

All funds raised from the event will be donated to the Rare Disease Society of South Africa (RDSSA), a non-profit organisation aiming to increase awareness of patients living with life threatening diseases. The organisation also aids children via assistive devices and provide access to appropriate healthcare.

The funds will be used to ease the ongoing infusions these children have to endure on a weekly basis.

And so, even after the harrowing experience, golfers left the course with smiles on their faces. They had but one request; “Next time, all we ask is that they turn the fans off.”

Irshaad Peer, member of the Amajuba Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) said: “The conditions made for some interesting golf,

especially when you tee off on the eighteenth hole and the ball lands on the seventeenth green.”

The winners of the day were Dr Farouk Kajee and Ahmed Moola, who played exceptional golf despite the tough conditions.

Dr Ebrahim Vahed, who heads the RDSSA’s Northern Natal division, thanked everyone who attended and sponsors Shabir Goga Inc., Budget Print and ReMax for making the day a resounding success.
