AS A NON-PROFIT organisation, the survival of the Vryheid SPCA depends exclusively on donations of money and goods.
No matter how big or small your contribution, every cent helps us to care for animals in need. And if all you can donate is a blanket or a tin of dog food, that’s fine too – you can rest assured knowing that one more animal in our care will fall asleep warm and with a full belly.

If you find a lost dog or cat, please bring them to the SPCA, or keep them safely in your home or yard and call us to come and collect the animal if you cannot bring the animal to the SPCA. If the animal does not have any identification, we keep them for seven days, giving the owner a fair chance to claim their animal.
If the owner fails to claim the animal within seven days, the animal will go up for adoption.
All animals adopted from the SPCA get sterilized, vaccinated and dewormed.

In the event of losing your pet, the Vryheid SPCA recommends that you vigorously pursue the following resources:

  1.  Contact your local SPCA. Note: If giving a report by phone be prepared to give a detailed physical description. It is always best to come view the animals in person and if possible, leave a photograph with the SPCA
  2.  Place an ad in the lost and found section of the local newspapers.
  3.  Contact surrounding veterinary clinics.
  4.  Make door to door inquiries in immediate and surrounding neighbourhoods.
  5.  Make flyers using a clear photograph and detailed description of your pet for placement in all locations of inquiry.
  6.  For a cat, set a humane cat trap. A frightened cat’s instinct is to hide in silence. Traps can be rented from your local SPCA.
  7.  Miscellaneous tips for finding your pet: Most “lost” cats tend to stay in the general vicinity from which they disappeared. It is rare that they would wander out of the immediate neighbourhood, unless perhaps, they were recently moved. Be patient and creative in your search.

A lost dog will tend to travel into the oncoming wind. This should be your first direction of search.

After you find your pet, report back to all the facilities where you left a report.

Spay or neuter your pet. This will help alleviate your pet’s desire to roam and has many other benefits.
