Sarel Cilliers stands tall in Derby Day clash

Congratulations to all players, for showing true sportsmanship on a stressful day and for demonstrating the true 'Never Surrender' spirit of the blue lions.

Rugby: Sarel Cilliers won its Derby Day rugby clash, with a 19 – 5 victory over Dundee High School. During a game which was played at an intense pace, Sarel soaked up the pressure and gradually began to penetrate the Reds’ defence. Sarel’s Willem Husselman broke the deadlock, with his try followed by a score from wing, Aphiwe Nkosi. Sarel entered the shed ahead 19 points to 0. DHS scored a consolation try to end the game.

Other games ended as follows: the u-14s won 51 – 0, the u-1s won 36 – 15, the u-16s won 10 – 8 and the second team won 12 – 10. Sarel wishes its rugby sides everything of the best for next weekend’s fixtures, against Hilton College. See the Derby Day spread in this edition for more photographs.

Hockey: Despite the girls playing their hearts out, the first team went down 1 – 0 to DHS. The first team boys walked away winners, by 1 goal to 0. The second boys team also played a great defensive game, but unfortunately lost 1 – 0. The second team girls match saw Bianca Hunlin score in the first 10 minutes. DHS soon equalised and the match ended in a draw. The u-16s won the game 1 – 0.

Chess: Sarel Cilliers’ chess team played its final match on Saturday against DHS. Sarel took a commanding early lead of 4 – 1, and ended the day as the winner by 7 to 3. The school thanks captains, matric learners S Tooray and B Mnyandi, all the best for their futures. The final results for the season are as follows: 5 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws, meaning Sarel is the 2019 victor. The team also thanks Pastor Marlon for all his assistance this year.

Congratulations to all players, for showing true sportsmanship on a stressful day. Although it was a tough season, they all showed the true ‘Never Surrender’ spirit of the blue lions. The school thanks all coaches and facilitators for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.
