#IMadeMyMark: Mosiuoa Lekota drops in – surprise Friday afternoon visitor

He surprised passers-by as he strolled around without any bodyguards

COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota made a surprise visit to Dundee while on the election campaign trail ahead of the May 8 general elections.

Mr Lekota surprised passers-by when he alighted from his vehicle on Victoria Street, outside the Dundee Adult Centre, at around 4pm on Friday.

Accompanied only by a driver and a secretary, Mr Lekota laughed when asked why does not have bodyguards – as is the case with most Councillors in Endumeni. The Courier recently revealed that bodyguarding for Endumeni Councillors had cost ratepayers over R800 000 in just over three months.

“You only need a  bodyguard if you know you have done something wrong. I walk free,” he said while strolling across the road to the Tourism Office where he confirmed directions to Durban where he was headed.

He was greeted by Naresh Gopie and Nakkita Bugden of Tourism Dundee who quickly made the former ANC stalwart and his staff at home.

Asked why he had left the ANC in 2008 to form COPE – Congress of the People – he said he had joined the struggle ‘years ago to make South Africa free for all who live in it’.

“South Africa belongs to all who live within its boundaries. We fought for justice and equality. In 1996 the Constitution was officially passed by Parliament. It is the highest law in the land yet when Mr Zuma took office we saw the ANC erode away these hard fought values. They disregarded all that we fought for – hence our need to form COPE – a party offering a fresh start for all South Africans.”

Commenting on the current chaos in local government in South Africa – including Endumeni – Mr Lekota said if everyone, especially those in public office, abided by the Constitution they would be no corruption, local government would work for the people instead of working for a few who ‘are there to make money out of serving people’.

Mr Lekota is no stranger to the district. In 1973 he was a Court interpreter in Glencoe and has fond memories of the area. He also played soccer extensively in the area, earning the on-field name of Terror.
