Parties gear up for May 8 national elections

All parties are out to woo voters

The first salvos of the national election campaign are being fired as political parties gear up to woo voters ahead of the May 8 election.

The DA hosted an information morning at the parking area of the Glencoe Spar Centre on Saturday morning with many supporters clad in DA blue.

Craig Miller, Deputy Chair of the DA in KZN, told the Courier and those who stopped to chat to party representatives, that the ‘time has come to vote for real change’.

“The ANC has shown it cannot change. The chaos in service delivery at all municipalities – never mind the Eskom debacle – is evident of this,” he said.

“Road, water, pavements, parks – these have crumbled along with most other infrastructure because of poor governance. The DA can deliver real change as can be seen in the Western Cape.”

Asked about the so-called co-governance arrangement between the DA, IFP and EFF at Endumeni (in place since the 2016 local elections), Mr Miller said ‘it is true that internal struggles within the IFP have impacted on stability within the Council’.

Endumeni has had numerous municipal managers – most in an acting role – for several years now.

The current one, SR Ntuli, is also suspended. Many other staff members are also on suspension with full pay.

“This disrupts the administration and ultimately it is the residents who pay the price because of this mismanagement.”

Endumeni Councillor, Anthon Raubenheimer, who was also manning the table with DA activists, from as far as Nquthu, said it is hoped that once all the investigations are done at Endumeni, ‘normality will resume’.

The DA’s Bernadine Hajee of Forestdale was pleased to be the winner of a microwave oven – a prize she won in a provincial DA competition.
