Ichthus learners enjoy an adventure in the Drakensberg

On Tuesday, April 10, 29 very excited learners and four just as excited teachers, travelled on tour to the Drakensberg Mountains. On the way they
stopped at the Siege Museum in Ladysmith, observing a replica of the Long Tom cannon that was used in the Anglo Boer War at the turn of the previous century.
The learners were divided into three teams, named after three prominent mountain peaks: “Sentinel”, “Cathedral Peak” and “Champagne Castle”. It was a delight that these mentioned mountain peaks were very visible as they travelled so that the learners could easily recognise them.
Great excitement was present as the group visited the Eskom Drakenberg Pump Storage Station, where electricity is generated using water. Every learner left the Eskom centre with very important facts on the safe use of electricity etched in their minds.
At the ATKV Drakensville Resort, everyone unpacked and delighted in ziplining across the Drakensville Dam. After some of the learners carefully tried to zipline, eventually nothing could stop them from ziplining twice. Some of the brave teachers even attempted this activity.
The world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir was an absolutely wonderful experience for every boy, girl and teacher.
Due to quite a heavy rainfall, for which everyone was so grateful, some of the hiking trails were out of bounds. The group, however, still had plenty of opportunities to show their skills on adventurous hikes, enjoying spectacular views of the whole Drakensberg Mountain Range.
The abseiling activity was a really scary one. One actually realises that the ropes that hold you are stronger than the force of gravity on you! Some learners abseiled down the cliff as if they were already doing it weekly.
Active fun and games assisted the learners to learn more about themselves and face challenging situations in a humorous way. The night swim in the heated undercover swimming pool was a real surprise, too.
A visit to the Royal Natal National Park was another highlight and the amazing, majestic Amphitheatre filled everyone with awe and respect for God who created the beautiful world in which we live. Interesting hikes, a forest study and experiencing waterfalls all around us, made this visit really worth the time. Then, before the Grade 4 and 5 learners returned to Dundee, a “ Mount-Aux-Sources” pizza treat at “Tower of Pizza” awaited them.
Ichthus learners and staff thank Drakensville Environmental Centre for the professional way in which they conducted the tour, as well as Mrs Viljoen, Anelia Kriel, Esmé Willemse and Rhoda Chawanda who accompanied the learners. Ichthus would also like to thank Mrs Catlett for the beautiful tour caps donated to every teacher and learner and the Dundee Adult Centre for hiring us their bus.
