DUNDEE KZN: Be pet friendly this Diwali

While residents enjoy the fireworks display, animals have better hearing than people and therefore can experience long-lasting trauma

Diwali is around the corner and while many get ready to celebrate the Festival of Lights, please spare a thought for the animals in the area.

While residents enjoy the fireworks display, animals have better hearing than people and therefore can experience long-lasting trauma.

Dogs, in particular, have a capacity that is four times more sensitive than that of humans, which means every firecracker sounds earth-shattering to them.

Often, they panic and try to escape. Several dogs go missing and some owners never succeed in tracking down their much-loved pets. Animals don’t understand what the hullabaloo is about, and hate being left alone amid all the noise. There have also been many cases in the past where pets were intentionally hit with fireworks, thus causing them to die.

It is essential, to know that while locals enjoy the essence of the colourful celebration of Diwali, they do not forget to take responsibility of their pets and ensure they are safe at all times.

One way to minimise their misery is to give them homeopathic or herbal anti-anxiety meds such as Rescue Remedy. Among other tips, few include keeping your dog in a soundproof room, keeping all doors and windows firmly shut; instead of putting them on a leash, or locking them when guests are over.

While celebrating the festival, residents are urged to make it their top priority to ensure their animals are safe. If they are unsure on how to do this, they may contact their local SPCA or veterinarian.

Wishing all our Hindu and Tamil readers a Happy and Prosperous Diwali.
