Diminutive Reynier wins Monthly Mug Competition

The day belonged to diminutive twelve-year-old, a junior golf member and scholar.

Thirty-four keen golfers, (perhaps somewhat mad), braved the icy cold weather conditions on Saturday to take part in the July Monthly Mug competition at Dundee Country Club. The day belonged to diminutive twelve-year-old Reynier Van Rensburg, a junior golf member and scholar from Dundee Junior School, who carded a net 68 to win the Men’s B division mug – a great achievement from a youngster who took up playing golf less than a year ago.

The Men’s A division mug was won by Walter Du Plessis on a net 71 with Jurie Engelbrecht carding the best gross score for the day, shooting a 73. Walter also managed to record two 2 Clubs, the first on hole No. 4 and the other on hole No. 8. Billy Francis and Sifiso Kunene both recorded their 2 Club on hole No.12. The jackpot was won on 12 points by Clement Chawanda. Lorein De Wit won the Ladies B division and H Hlongwane was the winner of the Ladies C division.

In contrast to Saturday’s icy weather, Friday afternoon’s sunshine saw 28 players compete in the 10 Hole Cross Country Challenge, sponsored by Morning Dew Chickens, which was won by John Zulu on 22 points followed by three players on 19 points, Sunel Von Mollendorf, Marc Bradbury and Henk Booysen. The third round of men’s local league takes place this coming Sunday with all the teams playing at Newcastle Golf Club. The A, B2 and Frog teams are up against Vryheid G.C. and the B1 side take on Ladysmith G.C. Saturday’s club competition will be Individual Bonus Bogey.
