Fraudsters target the public using ATMs

All cases were reported to the police and are under investigation.

On May 12, an unsuspecting victim realised R1042 was withdrawn from his account in Capitec Bank after someone purchased airtime and electricity. According to the police, the complainant received a call that informed him that someone was using his cellphone number to purchase airtime and electricity.

Another unsuspecting victim was robbed of R3000 after the ABSA ATM swallowed her card on May 13. Later she received an SMS informing her that money had been withdrawn from her account.

On May 17, two separate incidents took place where both complainants lost a significant amount of money.

At about 5pm, the complainant sent her brother to withdraw money from her account. Thereafte, she received a message saying R2000 was withdrawn from her account. When her brother got home he stated that the card was swallowed by the machine and he could not withdraw any cash.

In a separate incident, a complainant deposited R1500 at Shoprite Supermarket in Germiston for her mother in Nquthu. Her mother never received the money. The complainant went back to make inquiries butit was found that the money was withdrawn in Dundee.

All cases were reported to the police and are under investigation.

No arrests have been made.
