Farewell Squires, long-live Squires…

Petro and Mick say farewell

For years, Squires entertained Glencoe (and those who flocked to the venue from other towns) under the eagle eye of Petro Bush who fast gained a reputation of running ‘the neatest, cleanest pub in the area’.

A mother-like figure, who is not scared to lay down the law or speak her mind, Petro – with the quiet but able back-up of husband, Mick – was famous for handing out much-needed advice to what she fondly refers to as ‘my kids who came to Squires to socialise, play pool or watch sport’.

Last weekend, Petro and Mick said farewell to their many friends and customers at a farewell party at Squires in the Glencoe Spar Centre. The couple are returning to the UK. (Mick’s homeland although he says he has lived in South Africa longer than he has done in the UK!) for what Petro says are health reasons.

They will live in Milton Keynes in Buckhamingshire but Petro and Mick say ‘most of their heart will still be in Glencoe’.

“We made so many friends here. Business was good and we had plenty of laughs. Our aims were to provide a safe, friendly venue for all. I am sure we achieved that.”

The Bushes will, of course, take with them Shelagh Hine – a MS sufferer who is confined to a wheelchair – whom Petro has looked after for 17 years.
Good news for Squires fans is that the pub has been bought by Anton and Cindy Jacobs – a local couple who are well-known to patrons. “We are sure Anton and Cindy will continue to run Squires with the same passion as we did. We hope the public supports them.”
There is no doubt that Petro and Mick did leave some big shoes (takkies?) to fill.
