Our Duzi paddlers keep Endumeni’s flag flying high
They took on the mighty but somewhat low level Duzi River.
Dundee was well-represented in the annual FNB Dusi Canoe Race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban held over three days. Husband and wife team, Jurie and Brydey Weber, took ‘it easy’, choosing to portage (run on the banks of the river with their canoe on their shoulders) some of the bigger rapids for fear of wrapping their boat.
“Our goal was to finish so Jurie got get his coveted number 10 -i.e. successfully completing ten Dusi Marathons,” said Brydey, “water levels were low and some of the rapids had to be portaged. But it was a great three days!”
Other local paddlers who competed included Dr Shane Hilliar (finishing number 11) as did Dawid Jacobs. Jurie’s son, Wiehan, completed number five while Carl Donaldson, can say he now has two Dusis ‘under his paddle’.
Craig van Heerden, known better for his exploits on the Roof of Africa off-road motorcycle event in Lesotho, teamed up with former Duzi winner, Deon Bruss.
It was the pair of Andy Birkett and Lance Kime who were easily this year’s Duzi winners.
