Our land is green after welcome rains bring relief
Just over 400mm has been measured in central Dundee from September 1 up until Thursday morning
While the upper parts of Dundee and Glencoe still experience ‘water choking’ twice a day (Umzinyathi lowers the water pressure from around 10am to 4pm and from 8am to 4am daily which means high-lying areas are without water during these times), welcome rain has turned the once barren land green.
Farm dams suddenly have water and streams are flowing after the countryside was in one of the crippling droughts in living memory.
The Buffalo River, from Endumeni extracts all its water, is flowing and uThukela Water is pumping ‘at full tilt’ at the Tayside pump station.
However, the crisis is not yet over and Umzinyathi District Municipality who are responsible for the water reticulation in the area have urged residents to continue to use water sparingly. The Tom Worthington and Donald McHardy dam are still very low as the farm dams ‘up stream’ have to first fill up before spilling water into the dams.
