Man jailed for life for raping his stepmother

A man who raped his 69-year-old stepmother will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was found guilty in the Madadeni Magistrate's Court.

The court heard that in the early hours of August 9 2023, the victim was asleep when she received a phone from her stepson, asking her to open the gate as he had been allegedly evicted from where he was staying.

Worried, the victim let him (the accused) in after he promised to explain the entire situation once inside.

Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, NPA regional (KZN) spokeswoman, said the court further heard that after entering her home, she began preparing food for him as he said he was hungry.

“He followed her to her bedroom and raped her. At one point, the complainant then asked if he could use the outside toilet, and upon stepping outside, the victim screamed for help from her neighbours.

“The accused quickly fled but was later traced and arrested in Utrecht.”

The rape was reported to the police, and the victim taken to the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) for further support and medical attention.

During sentencing, the prosecutor, Zama Zikalala, highlighted the lasting impact the incident had on the victim, emphasising her distress over being violated by someone she knew and trusted.

The court declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm and ordered his name to be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

“The NPA welcomes the successful prosecution. We hope that sentences of this nature demonstrate the stance that we, and our partners in the justice cluster, are serious about fighting the scourge of gender-based violence,” Ramkissoon-Kara said.
