Dundee artist offers a pinch of pain, a touch of pleasure
Suave completed his matric at Dundee High in 2021, after which he went to Durban to study at the Durban Piercing College Academy, where he graduated in 2022.
The reasons for piercing vary greatly. Clinical Nursing Research, an international publication, found that 62% of people who have had piercings have done so in an effort ‘to express their individuality’.
People also pierce to commemorate landmark events or overcome traumatic events, or for religious/cultural reasons.
Even in normally conservative South Africa, piercings are now as common as tattoos for both men and women.
A first glance at Suave Sithembele Ngobese (23) may prompt a wide-eyed observer to murmur ‘Who hit you with a bag of nails?’
But any feelings of uncertainty are quickly dispelled when this measured, talented young man explains how his passion for piercings, fuelled by his artistic flair, has blossomed into Suave Piercings in Dundee.
While he operates from his home studio in Beaconsfield Street, Suave is willing to travel should clients feel more comfortable receiving their piercings in their own homes.
“My motto is ‘a pinch of pain, a touch of pleasure’,” he says.
Body piercing is subject to trends and fashions. Belly button and eyebrow piercings were popular during the 1990s when the piercing trend entered the mainstream. In 2015, the septum piercing and nipple piercing were considered highly fashionable. His love of art and jewellery complements his piercing business. “I have varied interests such as art, skateboarding, playing rugby, designing clothing, modelling and reading.”
He also enjoys designing jewellery. From a young age, his mother taught him and his brother, Dante, the joy of giving. From that, he started the Suave Foundation in Dundee, where he donates to the needy, including clothing and other items.
