Municipality Hosts Innovative Job Readiness Workshop to Empower Youth

The groundbreaking workshop, part of a province-wide effort, seeks to provide the youth with tangible opportunities and valuable information about various employment programs.

Amajuba District Municipality organised a vibrant two-day job preparedness training from August 22 to 23, as a proactive measure to address the issue of youth unemployment. This initiative, in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Office, seeks to provide young residents with the skills and confidence required to succeed in today’s competitive employment market.

The training began with lectures from the Prime Minister’s Youth Office, with a focus on the “Sthesha Waya Waya” employment program, which provides several government job opportunities.

The workshop’s highlight was a detailed presentation by Nompumelelo Zungu, a Premier’s Office spokesperson. Zungu reviewed the different programs available to the youth in the district and announced a key policy change: the Premier’s Office has lifted the prior age limit of 35 years for internships and other positions.

This move is intended to relieve the burden on older youth who may otherwise feel excluded from such possibilities.

“The removal of the age limit was designed to ensure that individuals over 35 years are still considered for internships, thus broadening their career opportunities,” explained Zungu.

The workshop did not solely focus on traditional employment pathways. Participants were also encouraged to explore entrepreneurial ventures.

The session included valuable insights from organizations like the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA).

These organizations provided guidance on starting and managing businesses, helping to inspire and equip the youth with the skills needed to become successful entrepreneurs.

Ending off the program was an interactive question and answer session where attendees could pose questions to representatives from various organizations. This segment allowed participants to gain personalized advice and clarification on the opportunities and resources available to them.

The introduction of this job readiness program was met with considerable enthusiasm from the young attendees. The municipality has committed to storing their job applications and CVs in a database to ensure that district youth are prioritized for future employment opportunities.
