Black Poison crowned Willies Mchunu Tournament champions

The Black Poison team from Watersmeet claimed a R15,000 prize after being crowned soccer champions at the Willies Mchunu Tournament last Sunday (July 14).

Empire from Ezakheni were the netball champions.

The games were held at the Gcizela sports field in Watersmeet.

Named after former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu, the tournament aims to promote rural sport and unearth talent. This is the third time the tournament has been held since its inception in 2019; it was disturbed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“At first, the focus was in Alfred Duma Local Municipality. However, the long-term plan is to expand this tournament to the district,” said organiser Thobela Msimanga. He added that, every year, they have talent scouts from teams playing in the top league.

The tournament consisted of two sporting codes, namely soccer and netball. There were 21 senior soccer teams, 32 U/15 teams and 14 netball teams.

Organisers Thobela Msimanga and Thabo Motlapeng thanked all the teams, schools and sponsors for making the tournament a success. They conveyed special gratitude to Mr Willies Mchunu, Simingaye Mnguni, Driver Khoza, Mduduzi Mazibuko, Rey Nsibanyoni, Sikhumbuzo Mazibuko, Simanga Mkhize, Sihle Makhubo, Lungisani Mtshali and Sipho ‘Tsaman’ Kubheka.
