Mayor lights up Maqaqeni area

More than 122 homes have been electrified and more will follow in the second phase of electrification

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Mayor Mduduzi Myeza officially launched electricity in the Maqaqeni area of Weenen, Ward 20, yesterday (July 16). He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Sithabiso Dladla, Municipal Manager SB Mthembu, councillors and representatives from Eskom.

This event was historic, as the community has never had electricity before.

The mayor gave a speech, during which he congratulated the community on having ‘lights’ for the first time. He also thanked them for behaving well during the work that was done, so that no problems were encountered.

Myeza warned the public not to engage in electricity theft, saying it is very important for the public to pay for electricity so that when there are problems, Eskom can come and fix them. “If you commit a crime, that will make it difficult.” He said that in order for Eskom to fix electricity problems in the area, 75% of the people must be paying for this service.

“We are turning on the electricity because we promised the community. They had already given up hope, because they said they last witnessed development in the times of Stanley Dladla, who was a mayor and member of the Weenen community. It’s not only Maqaqeni; more than 80% of the places here in Weenen have been installed with electricity. We are not done, but will continue because there are also other places where we are currently installing electricity,” added the mayor.

Mr Mchunu, who lives in the area, expressed his gratitude to the local authorities for installing electricity. “One can do a lot with electricity, but the most important thing is lighting. Now we no longer need to go to other places to use our equipment,” said Mchunu.
