Local law enforcement successfully arrest over 290 suspects in February

Newcastle SAPS kept busy this past month ensuring over 200 criminals were put behind bars for various offences.

In their ongoing endeavours to eradicate the crime scourge, the Newcastle SAPS, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, social partners, and security companies, has, from February 1-29 arrested 299 people, on charges ranging from attempted murder to robbery.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, said during the operations, arrests were made for various offences which included:

  • Attempted murder,
  • Burglary (business),
  • Housebreaking (residence),
  • Theft of motor vehicles,
  • Assault common,
  • Sexual assault,
  • Contravention of protection order,
  • Theft,
  • Fraud,
  • Possession of an unlicensed firearm,
  • Robbery,
  • Common robbery,
  • Robbery with a weapon,
  • Possession of suspected stolen property,
  • Shoplifting,
  • Theft of property,
  • Drunk driving,
  • Possession of heroin,
  • Possession mandrax,
  • Possession of Drugs,
  • Kidnapping,
  • Pointing of firearms,
  • Extortion and intimidation

Brigadier Vassie Naidoo, Newcastle SAPs Station Commander, said he appreciated the members’ dedicated efforts in arresting outstanding wanted suspects and encouraged the community to continue working in partnership with the local SAPS.

“I encourage the community to provide any information concerning any illegal activities in our policing precinct,” he concluded.
