Rapist uncle jailed for life by Nquthu court

He raped her on different occasions and threatened to kill her if she told anyone. He also sexually assaulted her.

A man who raped his underage niece has been jailed for life. The 45-year-old was appearing in the Nquthu Regional Court that heard that he had on several occasions raped the girl, who was 11 at the time of the assaults, in the Mondlo ara.

The matter eventually came to light when some family members became suspicious about how much time he was spending with the girl, and they approached him. While he denied any allegations, the girl confessed to what had been happening and he was eventually arrested.

In court, Prosecutor Nkosingiphile Sithole led the evidence of the girl, and her siblings, and medical evidence. Sithole also handed in a Victim Impact Statement (VIS) compiled by the girl and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer, Bhekithemba Hopewell Sithole. In her statement, the girl said that she felt betrayed as her uncle, whom she respected, had taken advantage of her. She added that her performance at school had deteriorated. She added that she felt embarrassed about what had happened and had contemplated suicide.

The man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and 12 months imprisonment for sexual assault; and the court declared him unsuitable to work with children. The court ordered that his name be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders, and he was found unfit to possess a firearm.

“The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution as it is our mandate to prosecute and get justice for all, especially those belonging to vulnerable groups. We hope this message has the necessary deterrent effect,” said  Natasha Ramkisson-Kara NPA regional spokesperson.
