Ladysmith Dunlop staff learn latest technology from Thailand

The team has brought back much-needed skills to help operate the machinery at the factory

Sumitomo Rubber South Africa’s commitment to developing its workforce and fostering independence within the African tyre market saw eight tyre builders and their foreman travel to Sumitomo Rubber Thailand for a six-week training period.

Now equipped with advanced skills to operate the Ladysmith plant’s critical new three-stage machines, the team has wasted no time in applying their new expertise and are already leading the charge on the shop floor.

Sumitomo Rubber South Africa, manufacturer and distributor of the Dunlop tyre brand, is forging ahead with a multi-billion rand investment project backed by its Japan-based parent company, Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI). The R1.7 billion investment drive was announced during the 50th anniversary of Dunlop’s Ladysmith manufacturing plant, which first opened its doors in October 1973 and has since been at the forefront of tyre production in South Africa.
