Newcastle Legends beat City of Refuge 3-1 in Social Soccer League

In the final game, Munawarah took on the Zim Stars. Both teams played aggressive and physical football.

The Newcastle Social Soccer League teams kicked off 2024 with some friendly games.

Zim Stars took on Fairleigh United with both teams giving new players an opportunity and experimenting with different formations.

It was Zim Stars that started off more positively, putting together a good few attacks, but were let down by poor finishing.

Fairleigh United should have been a goal up before the break but again their striker lacked the sharpness needed in front of the goal. The second half was the same scenario as the game ended in a goalless draw.

In the second match, Newcastle Legends took on the new boys, City of Refuge.

Being new to the NSSL, the City of Refuge came in with good support.

City of Refuge started with a pacey front three of Andrew, Jeremy, and Kyle, who had the Legends defence on the ropes.

As the game went on, Legends also tried out new players and took the lead through Shabir. Five minutes later, Akesh Dawlall won a penalty for Legends, and Dr. Gregory converted to double the lead.

Just before half-time, Akesh made it 2-0.

In the second half, City of Refuge began to push hard and almost scored on a few occasions.

Legends won 3-1; however, City of Refuge is a team to be watched closely.

Newcastle Legends gave 10-year-old Yadav Dawlall a taste of senior football as he was put on for the last five minutes.

In the final game, Munawarah took on the Zim Stars. Both teams played aggressive and physical football.

Zim Stars took the lead midway through the half.

The game went into half-time with the Zim Stars leading 1-0.

In the second half, Munawarah came out firing on all cylinders. It did not take long, for the Zim Stars defence to show signs of cracking.

Munawarah continued to pile on the pressure; however, Zim Stars caught them on a quick counter and doubled their lead.

Munawarah did get a goal in the last kick of the game, a little too late, though, as Zim Stars ran out 2-1 winners.
