Dundee’s ‘little stream’ turned into a raging torrent after heavy rain

The Dundee district has been hit by heavy rains since before the festive season.

Peacevale residents were on tenterhooks on Monday evening after a heavy downpour turned the Steenkoolspruit into a raging torrent.

The normally placed stream, that runs through Peacevale, came down in flood after over 65mm of rain fell in a short space of time.

Residents whose properties are adjacent to the Steenkoolspruit described how they kept an eye on the river as it threatened to burst its banks.

“Thankfully the water subsided and we could sleep in peace. We did not want to start the new year on that note especially after reading what happened in Ladysmith (where flood waters killed around 40 people,” said resident, Geetha Dookie.
