Dundee Hindu Temple marks annual Kavady Festival

Donations, kavady and obayam payments will be collected over the 10 days of the festival at the Dundee Hindu Temple.

The Dundee Hindu Temple wishes the community a blessed and peaceful 2024.
“We hope and pray that spiritually and culturally, you will be more enlightened and that all your wishes are fulfilled in this new year,” said secretary Geetha Dookie. Thaipoosam Kavady will be held from January 19 to 28 and the community should take note of the following dates:
Tuesday, January 16: Tying of kanganam and hawan for devotees, and carrying kavady on the main day from 18:00.
Friday, January 19: Flag hoisting at 17:30.
Thursday, January 25: Main Thaaipoosam Kavady at 17:00.
Friday, January 26: Marieamman Kumbum at 18:00 – Chariot Parade.
Saturday, January 27: Navagraha Shanti at 06:00 and Thirukalyanam at 17:30.
Sunday, January 28: Public Kavady at 09:00 and flag de-hoisting at 13:00.
Important notice for all devotees carrying kavady on the main Thaipoosam Day –
Thursday, January 25:
Devotees must provide their own coconut, flowers and lime, and decorate their own kavadies. Obayams, paal kodums and kavadies – R100 each.

Obayams will only be included in the programme for all those devotees and well-wishers who have made payment for this undertaking.
Those who wish to participate in daily obayams are kindly requested to notify the officials not later than January 14 to have your names published in the main Thaipoosam programme.
“We have distributed raffle sheets that are currently being sold.”
The prizes for this raffle will be announced during the Kavady Festival.
