Night markets offer a tantalising and varied culinary experience

Seedat described his first Night Market as a great success with a wonderful vibe, adding that it was 'buzzing' with activity well into the evening.

Through their Night Markets, the Cannon Lodge plans to offer Newcastle a completely different culinary experience every two weeks.

The owner of the Cannon, Mohamed Seedat, hosted the venue’s first Night Market on Saturday, December 9, allowing 25 home industries to tantalise residents’ taste buds with their unique cuisine.

“I saw a need for more variety in terms of food offerings in Newcastle,” said Seedat. “So, I thought, instead of letting the restaurant at the Cannon out to just one person or business, why not make it such that the entire community can benefit?”

Seedat’s idea to host different pop-up food vendors at the Cannon every two weeks will not only create opportunities for residents to try different foods, it will also give up-and-coming small businesses the exposure they need to attract new customers.

“People were happy for an opportunity to get out of the house, grab something delicious to eat, and socialise in a fun, safe, family-friendly environment. The great thing about our event is that we have ample space for indoor seating to comfortably accommodate all the families who support the market,” said Seedat.

“The shopping experience in a community market is very different from when you visit a mall or a store. It’s more intimate and more personal and benefits the local economy when you support local business.”

Seedat will announce the date of his next market early next year.
