Armed robbers caught during attempted home invasion

It's believed the suspects are linked to three other similar attacks around Newcastle in the past two weeks.

A suspected syndicate, involved in a spate of high-end home invasions, has been stopped in their tracks after attempting to carry out a fourth home invasion early on Tuesday morning in Aviary Hill.

Potgieter explained that their guard was stationed at a residential property on Parkiet Street on Tuesday when he spotted four men entering a neighbouring property at around 2:30 and backup was immediately called for.

“In matter of seconds our control room put the puzzle together and established that it was the same group of suspects who were involved in the home invasion and shooting on October 16 on Tarentaal Street. Our Armed Response and Specialised Intervention Units were summoned to the area to apprehend the culprits,” he said.

Upon arrival, a vehicle was spotted been driven with its lights off. It was then that the four suspects emerged from the sidewalk bushes and ran towards the vehicle.

“Our members swiftly responded by chasing the culprits; one was apprehended before he could get into the getaway vehicle; however, the other three suspects fled the scene in the getaway vehicle.”

Underestimating their capabilities, Potgieter said the suspects who fled in the vehicle thought they had made a clean getaway.

However, the Ithemba tracing team supplied intelligence to their specialised intervention unit, who caught the remaining suspects.

The vehicle used in the spate of criminal activities was also seized. The gang members arrested are a mix of locals and Tanzanian, Congolese and Malawian nationals.

The suspects were handed over to the Newcastle SAPS for further investigation. The investigation is ongoing, and more gang members are expected to soon be behind bars.

Units involved: Ithemba Specialised Intervention, Ithemba Armed Response, Ithemba Guarding Division, and Newcastle SAPS

“Well done to our members for the outstanding result!”
