NKZN Cop killer sentenced to 30-years behind bars

The Newcastle Hawks’ Serious Organized Crime Investigation, together with Ladysmith police officers from visible policing, K9, tactical response team, and crime intelligence, worked tirelessly to ensure their colleague's murderer was brought to book.

36-year-old Simphiwe Wellington Mhlungu has been sentenced to 30 years behind bars by the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court after he was found guilty of killing a Ladysmith K9 Officer in 2021.

Mhlungu was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for murder, 10 years imprisonment for illegal possession of a firearm, and five years’ imprisonment for theft of a firearm following a five-day trial.

Sergeant Protas Siphiwe Mazibuko (43) was driving his vehicle to his home when he was knocked from behind by an unknown vehicle.

It’s believed that when he got out of his vehicle to see what had happened, Mhlungu proceeded to shoot him, fatally wounding him, and then took off with his service firearm.

The Newcastle Hawks’ Serious Organized Crime Investigation, together with Ladysmith police officers from visible policing, K9, tactical response team, and crime intelligence, worked tirelessly to ensure their colleague’s murderer was brought to book.

Mhlungu was finally arrested merely two days after his murder and charged accordingly.

The Hawks’ provincial commander, Maj. Gen. Lesetja Senona, praised the Ladysmith and Newcastle police officers’ coordination and dedication, which led to the killer’s capture and conviction.
