Kwa-Mlimi residents receive clean, running water for the first time

The communities of Kwa Mlimi and Mndozo finally have something to celebrate now that no longer have to struggle to access clean, running water.

Newcastle Mayor, Xolani Dube, visited the small township of Kwa Mlimi on the outskirts of Osizweni on July 6, where he turned the taps on for the first time, leaving the community joyful and hopeful for the future.

In his address, Mayor Dube commented that everyone has the right to access clean, running water and that the municipality would continue working hard to ensure that every person has access to this fundamental, basic need.

“The Newcastle Municipality has prioritised water supply to the households of communities in both rural and urban areas. We have an obligation and a responsibility to ensure that the people of Newcastle have equitable access to clean water,” explained Dube.

According to a statement released by the Municipality’s Communications Department, this project has also brought financial and social relief to thousands of households and created a number of job opportunities for locals.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Nomzamo Ndebele, said that this project has brought back a ‘glimmer of hope to her life’ as she was also given a chance to provide for her family when she was hired as part of this project.

“Having a tap inside my yard is a dream come true to me. I am grateful that my life has been made so much easier today. In the past, we used to walk to the nearest river to fetch water, which was dirty,” added Ndebele.

Cllr. Musa Thwala, Newcastle Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Chairperson for Technical Services, said he and the Department (of Technical Services) ‘are extremely elated that people who could not conveniently access safe drinking water before can finally do so at the turn of a tap.’
