Newcastle’s Jo Claassen beats her own record at 2023 Comrades Marathon

Newcastle’s very own fitness guru, Jo Claassen, has proved that hard work and dedication do pay off after she bettered her own record by 11 minutes at this year’s Comrades Marathon, finishing in a time of 9:39:51.

Who is Jo Claassen?
Jo (37) is happily married and the mother of two children. She also owns a little coffee shop in town.

When she is not busy playing housewife and businesswoman, she can be found peacefully enjoying a morning cycle, piloxing (a form of kickboxing and Pilates), or a boot camp.

“All this extra exercise helps to make me a better runner at the end of the day,” she said.

Jo said she had always participated in sporting events since she was a youngster, but she never took it seriously until about six years ago, when she decided to start running to lose baby weight after her children were born.

“As I started to lose weight, I started enjoying the runs a lot more,” she said.

She eventually decided to run her first marathon, called the Mandela Day Marathon.

“It was a very difficult marathon, and I remember saying to myself that I would never run one again.”
