Fun facts: South Africa’s own ‘Stonehenge’

he exact purpose of these circles is also a matter of great debate

Did you know South Africa has ancient stone circles similar to Stonehenge in the UK?

Although some debate exists around their exact origins and how old they are, many experts assert they are human-made and predate the pyramids by thousands of years.  Whether this is true or not, they are fascinating and found in relative abundance in the Mpumalanga province.

The circle near Kaapschehoop known as “Adams Calendar,” is part of the Blue Swallow Natural Heritage site and requires permission to visit it.  The exact purpose of these circles is also a matter of great debate with some claiming them to be ancient sites of worship and others stating that they are simply old cattle kraals.

There does however appear to be some alignment of the stones with the position of the sun in relation to seasonal changes.  Either way, it is amazing to ponder these ancient structures and their true purpose.
