Project promises an end to Aviary Hill water and sanitation woes

The Ward 2 community and the surrounding areas will no longer be plagued by persistent water and sewer issues, thanks to the implementation of the Aviary Hill pipe replacement project.

This was a promise made to the community by Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube, during a sod-turning ceremony last Monday (June 12).

Dube, along with the collective leadership of the Newcastle Municipality, officially handed over the multi million rand project that is expected to put an end to water interruptions and sewer spillages said to be caused by the previous ageing infrastructure.

During the sod-turning ceremony held at the intersection of Drakensberg and Nagtegaal Street intersection, Portfolio Chairperson, Cllr Thwala, introduced the appointed contractor who will complete the second phase of the project, which involves replacing 12.3 km of asbestos cement pipe with UPVC pipe.

In his address, Mayor Dube, emphasised the importance of the pipeline replacement project, which he said ‘aims to address public concerns about sewer and spillage.’

“We are a people-centred leadership. While our communities are aware of the municipality’s current financial crisis, as dedicated leaders, we cannot always hide behind that and must do everything possible to ensure that the basic service delivery needs of the communities we serve are met,” he said.

“A project of this size was critical in addressing the water interruptions that have plagued our municipality. Today, our collective municipal leadership is proud to be handing over and working on other quality and necessary projects for the people of Newcastle,” he concluded.
