Local lass Dr Yonita Singh is ready to make a difference in the surgical world

Yonita Singh immediately comes to mind when one thinks of beauty and brains since she exemplifies the term; guaranteeing that she achieves her goal of becoming a respected surgeon.

After devoting the last 14 years of her life to finishing her education, Yonita (32) has at last achieved her goal of becoming a specialist surgeon.

“Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to be a doctor, so I decided then and there that I would work hard and not stop until I had achieved my goals,” she said.

After matriculation, she enrolled at the University of Pretoria, where she obtained her MBChB cum laude in 2014. It was during this time that she came to the realisation that operating and saving people’s lives was her true life’s calling.

Yonita spent 14 years studying, consisting of six years to become a medical doctor, two years of internship training, one year of community service, and five years of surgical registrar time.

“I furthered my training by doing a fellowship with the College of Surgeons (FCS) and then another master’s in research at the University of Pretoria (Mmed). The FCS consists of primary, intermediate, and final exams. I obtained the Brebner Medal for the best performance in the country for intermediates, which was quite exciting! All these exams, combined with a five-year practical registrar training programme, is what is required to be a practicing surgeon.

Her dedication has paid off and she was recently offered a fellowship to super-specialise in trauma surgery.

“Trauma is fast-paced, but the results and patient turnover is very rapid. It’s literally operating on a dying patient and having the ability to turn that situation around. At the same time, I am still able to practice every other general surgery operation I was trained for, of which I mostly enjoy operations that are aimed at curing cancers.”
