Community picks up shovels to fix potholes on R33

some of the potholes were ‘closed up’ but it wasn’t done in the correct way, hence the potholes open up again after heavy rains.

Residents and motorists have long been complaining that the R33 Paulpietersburg/Vryheid road is in a horrible state, covered with potholes for most of the 50 kilometres.
This road is used back and forth by families who take their children to school in Vryheid, or those who work in the area.
Vryheid AfriForum, together with local communities, started a pothole-patching initiative on Monday. Over a five-day period, they aim to fix the most dangerous potholes from the Khambula Farmers Association Hall to Vryheid; and from the Khambula Farmers Association Hall to Paulpietersburg and up to the Pongola Bridge.
Frequent motor vehicle accidents take place on this specific road, with many citing the gaping potholes as the cause. Eugene van Aswegen (district co-ordinator in KwaZulu-Natal) said that some of the potholes were ‘closed up’ but it wasn’t done in the correct way, hence the potholes open up again after heavy rains. He added that the constant traffic on this road doesn’t help matters either. This time around, AfriForum, together with several farmers and community members, will fix the potholes in the proper way to ensure a safer road for all to use. This initiative is solely dependent on donations of tar, gravel and other equipment.
