Derby Day a battle of red and blue

The rugby matches were battles between red and blue, and each team played with determination and gusto.

Derby Day, when Sarel Cilliers faces Dundee High School, is always one of the highlights on the sporting calendar.
Being the last matches of the season, the day is well supported on both sides.
Saturday was no exception, with Dundee High School hosting this year. The weather was cool and crisp – perfect for sport – and the teams were ready to give it their all. It was guaranteed to be an exciting day, and there was a palpable feeling of tension and expectation in the air as the players got ready to face their opponents.
The netball first team game was forfeited, second team lost 10-27, U/16 won 26-15 and U/14 lost 10-11 in a very close game. The first team girls’ hockey drew 1-1, second team girls’ hockey lost 1-4, U/16 team lost 0-5, while the U/14 team won 2-0. The first boys’ hockey team lost 0-1 and the second team boys’ hockey (undefeated for the season) won 2-0. The chess team drew 5-5.
The rugby matches were battles between red and blue, and each team played with determination and gusto. It was an exciting day for the spectators and well worth the price of entry. U/14 won 12-10, U/15 lost 5-22, U/16 won 12-7 and the second team won 19-0. The first team game had the supporters on the edges of their seats.
The Blue Lions scored the first try and made it look almost too easy, with Dundee High coming back to score a try and then a penalty kick. With Dundee High in the lead, Sarel Cilliers were fighting for possession of the ball, but were thwarted at every turn. In a nail-baiting finale, the Blue Lions scored in the last few minutes of the game to win by the narrowest of margins, 12-10, living up to their motto of ‘Never Surrender’. It was one of the most exciting games of the season and fortune favoured the bold. Well done to all the players on the field – you gave it your all and really gave the supporters a match to remember. Thank you to everyone involved; it was a great end to the season.
