Eight people were arrested and several traffic fines issued during multi-disciplinary operations held by police. Dozens of police officers from the Uthukela District were part of the operations that took place recently.
“Roadblocks were held in different areas, during which a large number of vehicles and persons were searched. High visibility blue light and foot patrols were conducted,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.
Compliance inspections were also done at liquor outlets and it was found that some people were selling alcohol without a licence.
The liquor was confiscated and the perpetrators charged.
“Eight suspects aged between 20 and 53 were arrested for being in possession of and / or dealing in dagga and other drugs, as well as for contravening the Counterfeit Act and Gambling Act,” said Khan.
Liquor, dagga, mandrax tablets, capsules suspected to be heroin, cigarettes and a gambling machine were among the items that were confiscated by police. In addition, several fines were issued for traffic offences. All the arrested suspects were expected to appear in various courts.
