Remembering those we lost

This annual event centers on a candle-lighting ceremony to remember and pay tribute to lost loved ones

A moment to learn, share and remember was afforded to residents that attended the Estcourt Hospice Remembrance Service on May 7.

This annual event centers on a candle-lighting ceremony to remember and pay tribute to lost loved ones.

Held at Hospice House, the service opened with a welcome from Hospice CEO Rena Licen who said that after the Covid-19 restrictions during the past years, she was glad to see the support from locals.

Zodwa Dladla.

Christine Tratschler recited opening prayer and Zodwa Dladla did a reading of Bible verses, which inspired hope and encouragement.

Pastor Gerald Hunt.

Pastor Gerald Hunt delivered a message that spoke of healing after grief, which he divided into three topics – past, present and future.

“Let go of past regrets, disappointments and hurts, we cannot hold onto these, it will draw you down. In the present, hold onto precious memories, talk about your loved one, share these memories with your family and keep them alive. Look forward to the future, have hope for the future. Life is not over. As believers, we know that death is a doorway to eternal life,” said Pastor Hunt.

The solemn candle-lighting ceremony followed where each person was given an opportunity to light a candle in memory of a lost loved one and if they chose to, they could share memories with all present.

The Remembrance Ceremony concluded with refreshments and a time to meet and greet.
