Broken streetlights heightens criminal activity in Signal Hill

Residents express concern for their safety and claim that they are "vulnerable to criminals who prey on their homes under the cover of darkness."

Concerned residents approached the Advertiser claiming that crime has increased due to the lack of lighting at night.

Residents allege that there have been four recent home burglaries, which they attribute to the damaged street lights. They claim to be always vigilant, and even the sound of dogs barking in the middle of the night makes them nervous.

The municipality has been contacted several times in an effort to file a complaint. It was disappointing that when they do get through (on the phone), all they get are reference numbers and no electricians are dispatched for follow-ups or repairs.

“When I first called to report, I was told the systems were down. I called a second time only to be told that my first call wasn’t logged.”

If the town does not address the issue, there is growing worry that crime will continue to rise as winter approaches and the evenings become longer.
