Mulhatton sentencing expected today – two and a half years after Ronnie’s tragic murder

The Calitz family have waited almost three years for justice

Sentence is to be passed today on Kenneth Edwin ‘Jimmy’ Mulhatton (32) after he pleaded guilty following  the murder in September 2020 of Ronnie Calitz.

The trial has undergone numerous delays since Mulhatton’s arrest on September 17, 2020, after Ronnie  was stabbed multiple times in his Beaconsfield Street home on September 16, 2020.

His house was then set on fire. The house was gutted in the blaze.
It is alleged that Mulhatton made off in the deceased’s bakkie, after loading up his television set and tools,  and drove to a house in Glencoe, where police found him the following morning hiding under a bed.

He has been incarcerated ever since in Ladysmith Prison.

Mulhatton pleaded guilty yesterday but denies stabbing Ronnie. He claims that on the night that he and Ronnie had a fight and Ronnie then went to sleep. Mulhatton then set the house on fire and stole his belongings and vehicle.

However, the Court has found him guilty of murder, arson and theft. The Court also heard that Mulhatton had previous convictions for burglary and possession of drugs.
