South African Weather service warns of possible heavy rainfall in Amajuba

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of a possibility of very heavy rainfall that could result in flooding in the Amajuba district.

The SAWS released a statement today (22 February), informing the country of Tropical Cyclone “Freddy,” which has made landfall along Madagascar’s eastern coastline yesterday evening (21 February).

The cyclone is expected to move west-south-westerly over the next few days, making landfall just north of Vilanculos (a coastal town in Mozambique) on Friday morning.

It is expected that “Freddy” will affect the north-eastern parts of South Africa, especially the Lowveld, Limpopo and Mpumalanga from early Saturday until Monday (25 to 27 February 2023).

“Although not as much rain is expected over other places in the north-eastern parts, residents of Capricorn (Limpopo), as well as Umkhanyakude, Zululand and Amajuba (Kwazulu-Natal) are urged to be extra vigilant as the situation may be exacerbated by the recent flooding events in these places.”

The SAWS assures the public that they are monitoring the situation around the clock and will provide regular updates via various media and social media platforms.

The public is urged to regularly follow weather forecasts on television and radio.

Updated information will be regularly updated and made available on www.weathersa.co.za as well as on SAWS twitter account @SAWeatherServic
